How do I turn off my engine without turning off the car?
Q. I have a G37 and it comes with the keyless push start button. I was wondering if it were possible for me to turn off my engine without actually turning off my car because it gets annoying to have to press the button again and wait for my car's computer to boot up. Thanks.

A. You can have a kill-switch wired in between the engine and the fuel pump power lead. Switching this to the OFF position will effectively shut off your engine by killing power to the fuel pump, but power will still continue to be supplied to all electronics such as radio/ecu/lights etc. This can be done at any reputable automotive shop (such as one that installs speakers etc) or if your even the slightest bit mechanically inclined you can do this yourself. Hope this helps! :) **On another note it also helps to install this kill-switch as a anti-theft device, you place this switch out of sight and turn it to OFF position when leaving your car, anyone trying to start your car will be unable to do so as it will just crank but not fire. Just a… [cont.]

97 Chevy Cavalier engine is turning over, but it wont start?
Q. I drove my car on Tuesday & it drove just fine, no problems at all. I get into it on Wednesday and it wont start, the engine is turning over sounding like it wants to start, it just wont. I have no idea what could cause it. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you!

A. You are going to have to determine if this is a mechanical, fuel or ignition problem. For instance, can you hear the fuel pump cycle when the key is initially turned on? Is it getting spark? Does it have fuel pressure on the fuel rail? Is the timing belt stripped or broken? Any blown control fuses? It's really a diagnostic process of elimination.

Should the entire crankshaft be moving and the engine turning over when removing the harmonic balancer?
Q. 76' Chevy 350 Thanks for the feedback, to clarify for a couple people...I'm only dealing with the Harmonic Balancer and the puller that I have attached to it. Everything has gone to plan until I start rotating the turning screw. Rotating the turning screw is rotating the entire crankshaft and there doesn't seem to be any separation of the Balancer.

A. Yeah, they'll move on you but you don't want it to. You need wedge something in the flywheel to keep it from turning over.

Does compass swing on helicopter require to be performed while engine and rotor turning?
Q. Where can i get the guideline to carry our compass swing on helicopter? Some helicopter carry out compass swing with engine and rotor turning but some not required. Why and what is the different between the two procedure? Example: S61A (Sikorsky) with rotor turning and Mi-17 (Russian helicopter) not required engine running and rotor turning.

A. I'll just take a guess that the blades have a ferrous metal in them, and would screw up what the MAD is sensing if they set static. It doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. Why would you design a blade with ferrous metal in it? If you'd use any metal in it, you'd think it would be stainless or titanium.

Would a seized a/c pump disable the engine from turning over?
Q. I have a 1990 Buick Century (my work car) that does not want to start. I have been driving it for the last few days without any problems. Then the a/c pump started making a chattering noise. Now the car won't start. Could it be that the a/c pump is holding the serpentine belt in place and not allowing the engine to turn over? Thank you

Is it harmful to a car's engine when filling up the tank with gas without turning the engine off?
Q. I have been told that in the longterm, if the engine is not turned off while filling up, it could result in engine damage. Is there any truth to this or just an urban myth?
Asked by Mr. Etits - Wed Sep 5 23:05:22 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It won't hurt it a bit... But, it can be quite dangerous to run the engine while re-fueling. Gasoline fumes from the filler neck could be ignited by a spark from the electrical system or a bad spark plug wire. Most, if not all gas stations have signs posted near the pumps telling you to shut the engine off while re-fueling because of the potential for a fire.

Will a 13 HP gas engine turning a hydraulic power unit drive a hydraulic motor needing 2000 psi and 5 gpm?
Q. The hydraulic power unit can deliver 5 gpm at 2000 psi
Asked by jimmyshehee - Fri Mar 10 22:17:35 2006 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments
A. I'm going from memory but the equation for horsepower required to drive a pump in this case is : HP= (Psi x GPM)/1714. so (2000 x 5)/1714 = 5.83 HP So your 13 HP engine could do it easily

A. Possibly coming from heater box unit. Hard to diagnose over the NET. Just take it to closest Hyundai dealer and have them fix it under your warranty coverage. You must have plenty left.

i heard an odd sound when turning on the engine of my honda civic 1994 and it will not start.?
Q. when i pumped the accelerator and re-start the engine, the engine will start. please tell me where's the odd sound came from. and is it necessary to hit the accelerator before turning on the engine? please advise. thank u and more power!
Asked by Niel - Thu Feb 4 01:42:59 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I don't know what the sound is, but if it is significant I expect it will be tied to another symptom. Right now the only symptom you report is that the engine does not start until you pump the accelerator. I think the 1994 ECU, like most, is programmed to mimic the behavior of carbureted engines. Holding the accelerator down will lean the starting mixture to clear a flooded condition and pumping the accelerator, with the key on but before starting, will richen the start.

Q. How do I remove the crank shaft pulley bolts on an 88 Chevy Astro Van without engine turning?
Asked by vargagirl - Tue Apr 21 16:21:12 2009 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Just put a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt, brace the other end of the wrench against a solid part of the car, and then briefly crank the engine. The starter will easily spin the bolt off for you. Never mind what "Mr. Certified Tech" below says, it works very well. And tightening the bolt is no problem. Just use some threadlock and jerk the wrench sharply when tightening it, and you won't have to worry about it coming off.

Bubbling noise after turning off engine?
Q. I sometimes hear a bubbling/gurgling sound after I turn off the car engine. It does it after driving short & long distances. It does not overheat at all. Any ideas on what it could be?

A. overfill rad? its the coolant overflowing to the over flow tank. it could still be overheating or you have a leak somewhere that would cause air to get in the system and make bubble noises. drive the car, pop the hood befor you shut it off. shut it off and run to see exactly where it coming from to better understand whats going on.

Do I really have to let my rotary engine warm up before turning it off?
Q. The guy that sold me my Mazda RX8 (that have rotary engines) told me the car has to warm up every time before turning it off or the engine will flood and need to get towed. Is this true? I've been looking up how to take care of rotary engines but no one mentions this. How long with the car idling before it is good enough to turn off? I do know that once it's warmed up I can turn it on and off without waiting (supposedly).
Asked by argh.pirate - Mon Feb 9 03:00:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. YES!!! As an RX8 owner myself let me tell you that this is very true of all rotary engine cars. Better fuel programming in the RX8 makes the situation better than previous versions but it's still something you should do, and it is specified in the owners manual. The cause of the situation is in the design of the rotary engine. All vehicles run "rich" (more fuel than normal) when you first start them cold. Then the car runs at high-idle until the coolant temperatures start coming up. Fuel flow gradually reduces to normal as the temperatures go up. The issue with rotary's is that if shut down before fuel flow is normalized you can have some excess, unburnt fuel start pooling at the bottom of the rotor housing. This thins the oil… [cont.]

Q. Can anyone please tell me why?
Asked by Becca x - Sat Mar 1 07:16:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The electric starter is staying engaged. This may because the solenoid is stuck or because the small wire going to the solenoid has power to it all the time. You can check this with a test light and if it does have power all the time, check the start button switch. If this switch works properly, check the wiring from it to the starter for a short circuit.

A. there are hundreds of reasons for the service engine light to come on, a bad sensor, evaporative leaks, engine misfire, oxygen sensors, etc., your best bet is to have it checked by a professional. Most check engine lights come on due to emissions related faults and usually has a performance issue with the powertrain. Auto Zone offers free testing for check engine lights, at least you will have an idea why the light is on.
