Conventional machining, one of the most important material removal methods, is a collection of material-working processes in which power-driven machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, and drill presses, are used with a sharp cutting tool to mechanically cut the material to achieve the desired geometry. Machining is a part of the manufacture of almost all metal products, and it is common for other materials, such as wood and plastic, to be machined. A person who specializes in machining is called a machinist. A room, building, or company where machining is done is called a machine shop. Much of modern day machining is controlled by computers using computer numerical control (CNC) machining. Machining can be a business, a hobby, or both. The precise meaning of the term "machining" has evolved over the past 1.5 centuries as technology has advanced. During the Machine Age, it referred to (what we today might call) the "traditional" machining processes, such as turning, boring, drilling, milling, broaching, sawing, shaping, planing, reaming, and tapping, or sometimes to grinding. Since the advent of new technologies such as electrical discharge machining, electrochemical machining, electron beam machining, photochemical machining, and ultrasonic machining, the retronym "conventional machining" can be used to differentiate the classic technologies from the newer ones. The term "machining" without qualification usually implies conventional machining. From Wikipedia under the

Certainly there were manual milling machines and turret lathes before there were computer controlled versions (and there still are of course) . There were also automatic turning machines (screw machines) that used cams and hydraulics, before there were electronic NC (Numerical Controll) which in turn predated CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) But as far as running a modern turning center with the computer disconnected or otherwise inoperable, I don't think so, I doubt any have a mechanical manual mode, any manual, jog or teach mode probably does rely on the computer. For a milling center, some of the smaller ones (job shop type) [cont.] Answered by tinkertailorcandlestickmaker - Fri Aug 31 16:32:54 2007 Machining centers, CNC lathes, rotary tables, mini mills, super mini mills. Lathes: Cut in in the horizontal plane Milling Machine: Cuts in the vertical plane CNC lathe: This is a lathe controlled by a computer. Generally someone, usually a designer will "program" a design to cut. This "program" is created in a special piece of software that is compatible with the machine and is essentially just a set of coordinates in a format the machine can understand. Then this program is fed to the machine by the operator. The CNC late will then proceed to cut the design by following the "program" by itself. At this point the only reason the operator would get involved is to stop the machine if there is a problem of some kind. There is also a CNC Mill (often called a CNC machine) that is similar except that it cuts from the… [cont.] Answered by ModelFlyerChick - Wed Sep 26 10:24:13 2007 Can you help me to find websites which provide sketches for different Mechanical processes such as machining?
Q. Machining could be: milling, lathing, drilling, grinding, etc... Other processes could be welding, filing, etc... Thanks in Advance Please help as i have to prepare a big report which i need the sketches to support it. i found this website www.roymech.co.uk any more? Each chapter gives comprehensive coverage of one aspect of machine shop operations, with well-illustrated discussions of the machine tools and procedures for their use. There are more possibly useful pictures in ref. 2 for lathe and milling-machine operations. (Click on the figure references on that page.)
